Lightweight Stiff Door Module

Background

Composites Evolution’s Biotex Flax/PP has been used to create prototype interior door modules for both the Land Rover Defender and Jaguar XF models, offering a lightweight, stiff component. The innovative construction of the hybrid biocomposite part enabled fixing points to be moulded-in, removing common failure points. Jaguar Land Rover contacted Composites Evolution as it was interested in the Biotex product portfolio. The Biotex Flax/ PP offered Jaguar Land Rover lightweight, stiff, sustainable biobased moulding opportunities.

Testing

The performance of the new parts was compared to current production parts. The biocomposite Defender Front Door Module was approximately 60% lighter than the current steel part at the same stiffness, while the Jaguar XF Rear Door Module was 35% lighter than the current glass filled PP component for the same thickness. The part also passed the environmental tests laid down by JLR.

Material Selection

Biotex woven Flax/PP reinforcement was used to sandwich a wood/PP flow compound.

Biotex Flax/PP fabric was selected by Jaguar and Land Rover due to its combination of good mechanical properties and environmental
credentials.
