Biotex Flax Used to Strengthen Sustainable Paddle Board for BIC Sport

BIC Sport has used Biotex Flax to develop the ‘Earth SUP’ range of paddle boards, with sizes from 3m – 4.2m.

Founded in 1979 by the Bich family, of BIC Pen fame, BIC Sport grew from the family’s passion for water sports and expertise in manufacturing. BIC has a desire to implement sustainable manufacturing processes including minimising energy use wherever possible.

For these reasons, BIC was interested in using a natural and sustainable glass replacement for its boards. After initial contact at the JEC composites show in Paris, BIC worked with Composites Evolution to find the best product for the board. Composites Evolution supplied BIC with its Biotex Flax 200gsm material, which is then used alongside Paulownia wood and cork to create the touring and leisure board.

BIC explains that Biotex Flax was chosen as it offers excellent flexure and vibration performance, whilst remaining true to its values. Flax fibre is a naturally sourced material with similar flex and tensile strength to fibreglass, but is more durable. It also user lower energy in production than fibreglass.

Gordon Bishop, Managing Director at Composites Evolution, commented “By replacing fibreglass with Biotex Flax, BIC are able to manufacture a high performance, high quality board with less environmental impact. We’re really pleased to be part of this and excited by the project’s future prospects.”

An Earth SUP board will be on show in Hall 7.3, Stand G70 at JEC Europe in Paris, France, from the 10 – 12 March.
