International 5.5 Metre Class Racing Yacht
Composite Craft’s latest project, an International 5.5 Metre racing yacht, is underway and Evopreg® EPC200 low temperature, out-of-autoclave cure prepregs were chosen in order to meet the weight requirements for the class whilst allowing efficient tailoring of the composite layup.
Composite Craft is a boat builder based on the Isle of Wight, specialising in foil making, custom and production build projects, design solutions and 3D CNC machining. They build International 14, National 12, Cherubs and National Swallows as well as foils for a multitude of dinghy classes.
Their latest project, an International 5.5 Metre racing yacht, is underway and Composites Evolution’s Evopreg® EPC200 low temperature, out-of-autoclave cure prepregs were chosen in order to meet the weight requirements for the class whilst allowing efficient tailoring of the composite layup.
Gavin Tappenden, Managing Director at Composite Craft said, “We were contracted to build a new design of 5.5m. To achieve the best hull, deck and internal structures we quickly decided that prepreg epoxy laminates were the best materials to utilise. The class rules prohibit the use of carbon fibre or aramids so we asked Composites Evolution to supply their EPC200 low temp resin system with s-glass reinforcements. This allowed us to be very accurate on the hull and deck panel weights, which are strictly governed by the class rules.
The lower cure temperature cure of EPC200 was of interest because of reduced potential of mould expansion and degradation. We are very impressed with the parts we have produced using this material.”
