Vacancy: Development Engineer / Development Chemist – Composite Materials (Maternity Cover)

Composites Evolution Ltd develops and manufactures innovative composite prepreg materials. Our products are used to make high-performance lightweight components and structures in a variety of market sectors including mass transport, automotive, motorsport, sporting equipment and consumer goods. We are passionate about helping our clients develop new solutions and we work with designers, converters and brand owners to help them utilise our materials in their products.

We are now looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Development Engineer or Chemist to join our Research & Development Team working on the next generation of composite materials. This is a fixed-term maternity cover appointment.

The role will primarily encompass:

• Developing innovative cost-effective composite materials and their associated processing technologies.
• Production of prototype materials and parts.
• Management and delivery of practical technical tasks within research projects.
• Testing, validation and economic assessment of composite materials and applications.
• Liaison with suppliers, collaborators and customers.
• Preparation and presentation of technical reports.

This is a fixed-term maternity cover appointment expected to be of 12 months. We are looking for someone with the following essential skills and experience:

• A background in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
• Hands-on experience with the production and testing of materials and/or components.
• A practical approach to problem-solving.
• The ability to plan and execute work across multiple projects.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• The ability to communicate technical ideas clearly through both writing and presentations.

Desirable, but non-essential, skills and experience are as follows:

• A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
• A background in polymers and/or composite materials. Experience of thermosetting prepreg materials would be a particular advantage.
• Previous experience in the management and delivery of collaborative project-based work.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role at the cutting edge of the composite materials industry. Given the fixed-term nature of the contract, it might be well suited to a recent graduate who is looking to gain industrial experience, or someone seeking an entry into the composite materials sector.

Composites Evolution is located in Chesterfield, within a modern office, workshop and factory environment. Chesterfield is located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, one of the most beautiful areas of the UK.
